Tow thousand years ago,Lady Li,favorite concubine of Emperor Wudi of the Han Dynasty,was a dazzling beauty:A dazzling beauty in the north county, the most peerless and graceful is she.A glance of her eyes can cause the fall of acity, while the second can cause the fall of a county. If only I know not the harsh fact,but I don't care, for such a devastating lady can be found nowhere!Unfortunately,several yers after she has been chosen as acncubine,Lady li died. Missing his beloved concubine,Emperor wudi fell into great trance and ignored court politics. One day li shaowong, one of his his ministers, went out and happened to see some children playing with dolls,with vivid shadows reflecting to the ground.An idea suddenly struck li shaowong that when he went back he made thr figure of Lady li with cloth and silk, colored it and installed wooden sticks to the hands and
feet of the figure. Later that night, the minister hah a squaye curtain set up and respectfuiiy invited the emperor greatly rejoiced at the show, and became very fond of it ever since then.The love story recorded in History of Former han dynasty, has been seen as the earliest origin of china huazhou piying.
Legend on huanzhou piying
It issaid that in the late west han dynasty, wang mang usurped the west han throng and chased liu xiu(who later became Emperor Guangwu of the East han dynasty).liu xiu was then chaseed to a temple on huashan mountain in huazhou fu (today's huaxian county of shanxi province).on that very night when
liu xiu was hidden in the temple, the citizens of huazhou who had subiected to continuous war affairs came to the tempie with piying to pray for peace. They burnt joss sticks before the Buddha and performed piying toseek blessings of peace. The sound-asleep liu xin in the tempie, who mistook it for the noise made by the chasing troops of wang mang . liu xiu ran out of the tempie hurriedly and hid in a cracked rock. When wang mang 's troop arrived,wang mang sent for a soldier to find out about mixed sound. He went back and reported it to wang mang, which had mage wang mang to change hia mind and to call for more troops the next day. Hencen ,liu xiu had the opportunity to escape on the same night.
After defeating wang mang and became emperor, he conferred the title of roydl artists on huazhou piying artista,who then performed specially for royal families and imperial court ministers.later on,piying had been passed on to the peopie outside the imperial court and began to become prevalent all over the country. The tmple where the emperor had once hidden has been conferred the name
hidden dragon tempie.more amazingly,on the surface of the rock in which he hid appeared one giant drgon with four smaller dragons,named crouching dragon rock.these historical sites are now well-preserved in today's huaxian county.
Features of huazhou piying
Huazhou piying is bears the feature that each scene is accompilished by five people,which is different from other piying performances requiring seven to eight perfoymers. Throughout the show,the scenario is sung by one sticker controller with piying and all the music is piayed by there musicians,aii of which can create the artistic stage effect of telling the history of thousands'years old with one mouth,wielding millions of warriors with two hands.

Huxian Peasant Paintings originated in the late 50s. Jinshan county style originated in the late 70s. Both styles show the ordinary aspects of rural life. The paintings explore all parts of daily life. Festivals,
parades, harvest, weddings, village traditions, farm animals, and children are all depicted in their paintings. The style can be described as primitive, with child-like figures and bright colors which are often exaggerated.
Huxian County is located 40 kilometers southwest of Xi'an. It is a picturesque place with Qinling Mountain to its south and Wei River to the north. It's also one of the cultural regions both famous at home and abroad. The peasants' paintings in this county have a long history and large variety.
After more than 40 years' development, the ¡°county of paintings¡± has a producer group with more than 2000 artists and among them 200 famous ones. There are over 100 artists have become associators in Provincial Artist Association. Some of them have been appraised as provincial folk artists and some as first class, second class and third class artists of county level respectively. In the last 20 years, the peasants' paintings in Huxian County have awarded surprising numbers of rewards and been
collected by museums, galleries and individuals from home and abroad and have been exhibited in more than 60 countries.
